I do get a bit of the heel slip but I deal with that with lacing methods. My feet also will swell on longer rides and that helps. Overall, I'm pleased because my foot is so wide I'm happy I can wear anything but I really dislike how heavy and clunky these are. But if you need a wide toe box shoe because you wear Xero, Altra, Lems, etc etc, then this is a fit.
I usually wear a size 11 EEE, and while this shoe doesn't come in a dedicated wide size, the size 46 (so, a size up from the size 45 I would usually buy) fits me wonderfully. The wide toe box is extremely comfortable, so much so that I just bought a second pair so I'd have a backup. If you have wide feet and are looking for a bike shoe that looks like a normal sneaker, this is your shoe.
In my 30 years of cycling, this is the first pair of cycling shoes I've ever worn that haven't themselves caused foot pain. The Comfort Plus last is the cycling shoe shape I've been waiting for all my life! Plenty of room for the toes to spread out, distribute force more naturally, rather than getting all bunched up, tight and inflamed.
I can only find two minor faults in the shoes, hence 4 out of 5 stars:
- First, the sole is not soft and grippy enough to use with flat pedals for mountain biking, it's basically as stiff and hard as any traditional rubber sole. The tread pattern is also not sufficiently grippy as you might find on a typical clipless MTB shoe with the harder rubber. I haven't fallen on my face yet, but the lack of grip is noticeable if you're pushing up a steep/loose climb. They should really commit to a soft-soled, flat pedal version of this shoe without the SPD compatibility, and another with a more aggressive tread and SPD cleat interface.
- Second, the laces are a bit fiddly. It's hard to get a 'just right' feel across the whole foot and when you get it wrong you need to stop and re-lace. I keep lacing them too-tight out the door and getting a tight painful spot over the bridge of my foot. The ankle/upper cuff area is also not quite as snug as I like. I think a velcro strap closure at the ankle would solve this (and be an easier way to keep the laces tucked too). The MX201 model with the Boa closure probably solves this too, but for $110 more with the same flawed sole, I'm not sure it's worth it.
Overall, best cycling shoe I've ever owned with minor flaws that can be overlooked for the comfort they provide. Very much looking forward to a more high-performance MTB race shoe from Lake using this Comfort Plus last, and looking forward to to winter shoes with the Comfort Plus last too!
I wear a size 50 and this shoe fits me well. The wide toe box is especially nice.
The shoes are very stylish and look nice while just walking in them. You would not know it is a cycling shoe.
Seem to be well-made and very sturdy as well!
These are the most comfortable cycling shoes I have ever worn!
