Have had my Lake 201s for over a year now - still shocked I've finally found a cycling shoe last that fits my foot (and I've tried A LOT - even had the opportunity to go into the Lake offices in Chicago to try literally every shoe size and width they offer! Great helpful crew there!) which has restored hope that I can ride without foot pain. These would make for an exceptional indoor/trainer shoe; the mesh in the front is very "meshy" and provides little to no protection/insulation. Agree with another poster that the boa works great on the midfoot, but doesn't go down low enough to have my toe area feeling very secure at all - as much as I love the width/comfort, it's a little unnerving being able to freely wiggle all my toes up and down while I'm dialed in. That said, as someone with a very wide foot (from the toes down through the midfoot) these shoes are exceptional. Only offering any bit of critical feedback in the hopes that Lake sees it and makes more shoes on the comfort plus last (maybe with a second boa and some more leather/synthetic around the toebox to keep my foot feeling more securely attached to the all-time-great-for-me comfort plus last?)
Comfort for a wide foot - 5++ stars
Materials - minus 1/2 star - the mesh in front has held up from a durability perspective, but is too open/airy for me, would prefer at least a little more protection from the elements
Secure fit - minus 1/2 star - these are the only shoes I've found that feel secure around my very wide midfoot without pinching, but at the expense of my toes not feeling like they're engaged/secure at all
...I can get shoe covers to protect my feet from the elements, and I can recognize that I'm old and don't need 100% power transfer efficiency on my sub-20MPH typical ride, but I can't do anything with a shoe that leaves my feet in pain - these are the first shoes I've found that leave my feet with zero pain. I'll keep buying and evangelizing them until/unless another comfort+ road shoe comes out with a more secure fitting option around the toes!
These shoes have volume to a fault. The width is great, allowing the toes to swell and splay and giving ample room to wiggle. But the downside is the foot just kind of flops around in them. Having just one boa is a problem, and the side pieces that firm the upper to the foot don't go down low enough to snuggle the entire top of the foot. The heel is also a bit loose. I tried a few different sizes and, in the end, settled on the smallest size that I could get by with, but I still have loosness in the heel and on the top of the forefoot. I've added a tongue pad, thicker insoles and a heel gripper to compensate. The other thing about the material used in this show is that it really encourages the growth of smelly bacteria causing odor. I dry my shoes after every ride with a shoe dryer. This has always worked well with my Specialized micro fiber shoes, but it doesn't seem to help at all with these, just filling up the garage with strong foot odor. I'm still trying a variety of remedies to kill it off - shoe deodorizers, sprays, freezing, ozone, etc... I'ld love to have this footbed with a slightly less volume upper that is made with an odor-resistant material.
Most comfortable cycling shoe ever made, hands down!
Absolutely amazing, I now have 3 pairs (1 white-road, 1 black-cyclocross/mtb, and 1 sized-up for winter socks). Cycling and racing for over 30 years, I thought it was normal for my toes to go numb on longer rides...until I bought these. So comfortable and no more numb toes. The stiff carbon sole is perfect for racing, too!
Most comfortable bike shoe EVER.
